Brown Bag Discussion

Situational Interest and Academic Motivation of Students in Museum Settings

Come to a brown bag discussion this Wednesday, January 13th in Room 119A from 12 until 2:00 pm.

Visiting reacher Niels B. Dohn will give a presentation that will focus on catching the situational interest of students in informal learning settings. Situational and individual interest will be defined and its relation to intrinsic motivation will be discussed. Two case studies will be presented which aim at investigating how situational interest of high school students was revealed in aquarium and zoo visits. Sources of interest and influences on academic motivation will be discussed.

Mr. Dohn is a visiting researcher from Denmark, with an affiliation to the Graduate School of Education, UC Berkeley. He is a former high school teacher in biology and physical education, and holds a doctoral degree in science education from the University of Southern Denmark. He has been a learning facilator in a Danish science center and assistant professor at the University of Aarhus. His research concerns students' interest and learning in informal settings.
