Teachers indicate a strong desire for additional professional development. There was an overwhelming response from survey respondents for PD. Less than one-third of respondents believed there are adequate opportunities for teacher professional development around science. Ninety-two percent (92%) indicated they would be interested in more science-related PD being offered. Ninety-three percent (93%) would engage in collaborative opportunities where teachers would discuss and share teaching strategies and ideas. Teachers indicated a desire for PD in multiple areas including: teaching science to English language learners, integrating science with other disciplines, and use of technology in support of science instruction.
At the same time, nearly half of teachers indicated they have no free time to participate voluntarily for science PD and are unlikely to do so unless supported or required to do so by their school district.
