The few county or district offices that report high quality support point to the influence of a science “champion.” These champions may utilize a variety of strategies for supporting science education. Some of the most frequently mentioned strategies include:
- Create partnerships with SREIs and private sector corporations
- Help teachers access existing Bay Area resources for professional development and materials implementation support
- Support inquiry science through use of supplemental materials in schools/districts that have “textbooks”
- Marshall external funding (parcel tax, special grants, local ed fund, etc.) to support science - i.e. a lab in every school, portable science carts.
- Provide instructional leadership for science so that science stays on teachers’ minds and in classrooms
- Keep district and school administration focused on science
